Student CV for internships and first jobs
Little work experience is normal at the start. Recruiters reading a student CV look for evidence: what you studied, what you built or organised, and how you work with others. A clear one-page CV that shows that evidence beats a long one that hides it.
Put education first
- List your degree or diploma, institution, and expected graduation date ("Expected Jun 2027").
- Add a grade or classification only if it helps you.
- Name two to four relevant courses or a final-year project, not the whole programme.
- Once you have a year or more of relevant work, move Work Experience above Education.
Projects count as experience
University projects, hackathons, a club website, a research poster or a business case competition all show real skills. Write them like jobs: the project name, your role, the tools you used and what came out of it.
Add a link (GitHub, portfolio, published article) where one exists, so the reader can check your work.
Internships, part-time jobs and volunteering
- Internships go under Work Experience with the word "Intern" in the title.
- Part-time and summer jobs show reliability, customer contact and time management, even if unrelated to your degree.
- Volunteering and student associations show leadership and organisation: say what you organised, for how many people, and how often.
Skills you can prove
List tools and languages you have actually used (Excel, Python, Canva, a CRM), and give language levels honestly. Avoid long lists of soft skills such as "hard-working"; show them in your bullet points instead.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a student CV be?
One page is the norm for students and recent graduates in most countries.
Can I import my LinkedIn profile instead of starting from zero?
Yes. Download your LinkedIn profile as a PDF and import it, or import an existing CV (PDF, Word or TXT, up to 10 MB). You preview the content before applying it.
What does it cost?
The live preview is free. Downloading a CV starts at $4.99 once (CV Builder). AI improvement, job tailoring, cover letters, LinkedIn and interview preparation come with the higher plans. There is no subscription.
